  • Andrea Shaw

    DVM

Dr. Andrea Shaw joined VCA Santa Anita in September 2004. Prior to obtaining her D.V.M., Dr. Shaw earned her Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. Although she enjoyed research, she realized during her graduate studies that she wanted to pursue her lifelong interest in becoming a veterinarian. Starting out as a receptionist at a veterinary emergency clinic, she quickly advanced to a technician and worked for 2 years at the Beechnut Animal Emergency Clinic after hours while completing her doctorate. She was accepted, site unseen, to the School of Veterinary Medicine at University of California, Davis. Dr. Shaw successfully defended her doctorate thesis in June 1996, just in time to join the class of 2000 at U.C. Davis. Following completion of veterinary school, Dr. Shaw participated in a 1 year internship at Animal Specialty Group in Los Angeles, where she refined her skills in Internal Medicine, Surgery, Ophthalmology, Oncology, and Emergency Medicine. After completing her internship in 2001, she was eager to enter into general practice. Dr. Shaw's professional interests include general medicine and surgery, ultrasonography of the abdomen and thorax/heart, stem cell therapy for palliative treatment of canine osteoarthritis and musculoskeletal injuries, and OFA radiography. She is very active in animal welfare and is the lead veterinarian for Heaven on Earth, a non-profit organization aimed at providing care and homes for older cats. She also has participated in several research studies, including the use of immune modulators to treat cats with retroviruses. Dr. Shaw lives with her husband, Jon, their 17 year old cat, Jeremy, and their 2 year old dog, Josie. When she isn't working at VCA Santa Anita, she enjoys gardening, drawing, cooking, and working with Heaven on Earth.
